President’s Overview
Pamela Andreatta

Happy Spring to you all! The Society leadership has been busy integrating the changes you approved in our last election and preparing to facilitate the next Pamela Andreattaphases of our growth, including providing as many opportunities for your participation as possible. I present the transition framework for our committees, introduce our new IMSH Meetings logo, and provide an update about the strategic plan writing below. Additionally, Jenn Manos provides some administrative updates and a staff profile for you to get to know a little bit more about the people behind the scenes that make the Society run.

The rest of this edition focuses on the work of a few highlighted affiliate committees, sections, and member participation in meetings sponsored by our affiliates and partners. Eric Bauman and Jeff Taekman will share their experiences as Chairs of the SSH Games Arcade at the Institute of Medicine Envisioning the Future of Health Professional Education Workshop.

This issue’s Member Profile section introduces two high energy, dedicated and engaged members who use simulation to impact systems-level changes at their respective institutions: Drs. Dimitri Papanagnou and Yue Dong. Both are reflective of the commitment each of our members brings to the uses of simulation to positively impact quality and safety in healthcare.

Committee Transitions

As we transition to the new committee structure, the appointed Chairs and Vice Chairs will be requesting that all members who wish to participate either as a committee member or as part of an affiliated working group indicate their interest by submitting their names during the open call for committee participation. The open call announcement will be sent to the membership in the next few weeks via email and through the SSH website. The committee charges from the Board of Directors will be available for review at the time of the call so that members can see what projects they might be interested in contributing to. All members are welcome to participate in committee activities!

Committee members are asked to serve a 2-year appointment and require a bit more expertise as their function is to serve as team leaders, domain experts, and mentors to the community. Working group members may have any level of expertise and contribute at any time as part of a project team or task force, or in the role of mentee.

If you are already part of one of our Sections, SIGs, or Affinity Groups, please let the Committee Chairs and Vice Chairs know if your group is interested in supporting their efforts. The intention of the re-organization is to facilitate more cooperation and collaboration, so please let us know how it works for you!

National Patient Safety Foundation Meeting, Austin, Texas
The Society participated at the 17th Annual NPSF National Patient Safety Congress and those in attendance were happy to see the acceptance of NPSF logosimulation-based methods highlighted as an essential component towards improving quality and safety in healthcare, for both patients and providers. As part of the live learning theater presentations, SSH members Connie Lopez, Jared Kutzin, and their colleagues featured how simulation can be used to facilitate the development and maintenance of individual and team performance in managing obstetric emergencies. The buzz following each presentation was fantastic to witness and opened the door for further SSH at NPDFdiscussions with colleagues from other patient safety domains, such as insurance and administration. The number of SSH members present at the Congress further amplified the inextricable ties between the uses of simulation-based methods, patient safety, and quality of care.  Dr. Paul Phrampus, Dr. Jared Kutzin, and I had the honor of being interviewed by the Laerdal team as part of their efforts to inform the community of this important connection – you can view these interviews online here:

New IMSH Meeting Logo

IMSH 2016   IMSH 2017

We are excited to release the new IMSH Meeting logo that was created by our design firm Gavilan and Associates in partnership with the executive staff (Jenn Manos, Kevin Helm), Chairs of the External Strategic Relations Committee and Meetings Oversight Commission (Sandi Feaster, Bob Armstrong, Wanda Goranson), and Executive Committee. The IMSH logo integrates the SSH logo and reflects the global sharing of ideas, as well as the connection between simulated-live human engagement. The color scheme will vary with the them of the meetings. The Board of Directors approved the logo and it will be proudly initiated for IMSH2016 in San Diego!

Strategic Planning
The Executive Committee (EC) met in late March for a weekend retreat to complete the writing of the SSH strategic plan. The draft of the plan has been circulated to the Board of Directors, who will provide feedback and edits to the EC before the June 2015 BOD Meeting. The Board of Directors plans to make the framework for the strategic plan available to the membership on the SSH website shortly thereafter. I encourage all members to review the plan and to provide feedback to the Society’s leadership, as well as to engage with the good work proposed moving forward. There are now numerous opportunities for participation at all levels, with flexibility for the amount of time commitment you can make.

I close the president’s overview by proudly adding the initials CHSE to my signature line and feel honored to join my esteemed colleagues who have precededCHSE logo me in this regard. And as always, I welcome your comments and feedback!
