Happy holidays, everyone!
As I enter my final month as your President, I find myself reflecting on what we, as an organization, have accomplished this year and what I have learned.
SSH has grown to nearly 4,600 members comprising physicians, nurses, educators, operations specialists, military, dentists, veterinarians, psychologists, administrators, and many more. Our simulation community has grown from mannequin-based education to include standardized patients, virtual reality, gaming, and artificial intelligence. This amazing growth will be reflected at next month’s IMSH Exhibit Hall with all of the new technologies! (We’re anticipating more than 130 exhibitors and near-record or record attendance again this year.)
In other very exciting news, I am pleased to announce that SSH Certification has officially become accredited!
SSH Director of Certification Andrew Spain received notice that the SSH Certification program has been accredited by the National Commission for Certifying Agencies (NCAA) for a period of five years for both the CHSE and CHSOS programs. This is incredibly exciting and something the entire Certification team has worked toward for many years. Congratulations to the entire Certification team, both past and present! You all have dedicated time, knowledge, and expertise to this accomplishment. This accomplishment is a tremendous milestone for SSH certifications, and one major indicator of the high quality with which we develop and deliver our certifications.
Second, we are pleased to announce version 2.0 of the Healthcare Simulation Dictionary is complete and has been submitted to AHRQ for virtual publication as an AHRQ listing.
Thank you to the Editor, Lori Lioce, and the Associate Editors: Dayna Downing, Todd Chang, Jamie Robertson, Mindi Anderson, and Desiree Diaz for their contributions and dedication to the growth of the Dictionary.
The team is grateful for all who have submitted and reviewed items over the last three years and expressed gratitude for the ongoing support from the Board of Directors. In addition to 20 years of IMSH, we have a lot to celebrate in San Diego!
Elsewhere …
A few weeks ago, I conducted a simulation course and had some interesting conversations with the participants around the term “Standardized Patient”. It reminded me of a few years ago when we started dialoguing around the term “confederate”, which, although it is in our dictionary, has been slowly eliminated as a role and now we use “actor” or “standardized participant”. The point is that we continue to evolve as an industry and a Society.
I spoke to Valerie Fulmer, President of ASPE, and she tells me that the SP term is creating lively conversation in her organization, as well. ASPE is a long-time affiliate partner of SSH, and, in 2017, published the ASPE Standards of Best Practice.
