Hello, SSH Community!

I hope this message finds you in good health. With November upon us, I'm pleased to bring you the latest news on our upcoming events and programs. It’s your passion and commitment to healthcare simulation that truly energizes and expands our community!

IMSH 2025 Main Stage Sessions

As we continue to prepare for the International Meeting on Simulation in Health (IMSH) 2025 — our 25th anniversary meeting! — I am pleased to share news about our two Main Stage sessions that highlight the "Reaching Forward" portion of this year's IMSH theme.

Join us for a screening of the new documentary, “The Pitch,” which explores the evolving role of technology in enhancing patient safety across medicine. Featuring expert interviews and real-world technology solutions, this film by Mike Eisenberg, director of "To Err Is Human," delves into the healthcare system's challenge to embrace the next generation of patient safety innovations. This will be followed by an extended Q&A session with the film director and editor, offering deep insights into the documentary’s themes.

Our second Main Stage session, “Virtuous Cycle of AI, Simulation, and QI,” will be presented by Dr. Patrick Tighe. This session will explore the integration of AI, simulation, and quality improvement (QI) within the Learning Health System (LHS), emphasizing their collective impact on healthcare. Dr. Tighe will discuss LHS concepts, the potential of AI and QI, and address QI's limitations from a Resilience Engineering perspective. The session will conclude with a 30-minute fireside chat with leaders in the healthcare and simulation community.=

Membership Growth

As of November 1, 2024, SSH membership has reached an all-time high of 5,449 members from 68 countries!

Our membership committee is enhancing networking opportunities for both in-person and virtual attendees at IMSH 2025, including dedicated lounges for first-time attendees and general networking.

SSH Certification Programs

A total of 5,104 individuals from 50 countries have now achieved certification through SSH:

  • CHSE: 3,983 individuals from 45 countries since June 2012
  • CHSE-A: 131 individuals from 14 countries since August 2014
  • CHSOS: 999 individuals from 21 countries since May 2014
  • CHSOS-A: 43 individuals from 7 countries since March 2021

To support those interested in certification, SSH staff are preparing “micro” videos for each step of the certification process. These will be posted on the SSH YouTube channel to complement our existing resources.

Healthcare Simulation Safety

I am pleased to announce the launch of new materials and resources on the SSH website, developed by the Foundation for Healthcare Simulation Safety (FHSS). These resources bolster the well-recognized “Not for Human Use / Education Only” sticker initiative. At SSH, we continually strive to enhance our support for members and the global healthcare simulation community at large. Sustaining this vital service from FHSS represents a significant opportunity to advance our mission. On behalf of SSH, I extend our sincere gratitude to Dan Raemer and the FHSS team for their unwavering dedication and commitment to improving safety in healthcare simulation.

Healthcare Simulation Dictionary Version 3.0

Finally, I am delighted to announce that Healthcare Simulation Dictionary Version 3.0 is complete and will be launched at IMSH 2025. The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality will be printing 4,000 copies for distribution at the event, and the dictionary has been translated into 10 additional languages. A special thanks to all SSH members and our affiliate organizations for their contributions to this vital resource.

I wish everyone a wonderful and safe November. Be well!

Warm regards,

Dr. Barry Issenberg, M.D., FSSH
2024-25 SSH President
