Society for Simulation in Healthcare/Institute of Medicine Serious Games and Virtual Environments Arcade and Showcase
By Eric B. Bauman, PhD, RN

The SSH Serious Games and Virtual Environments SIG was recently invited to facilitate an arcade and showcase at the National Academies Institute of Medicine in Washington, DC as part of a two-day work shop titled: Envisioning the Future of Health Professional education on April 23 and 24.  The Institute of Medicine (IOM) is an independent, nonprofit organization that works outside of government to provide unbiased and authoritative advice to decision makers and the public.  The IOM was established in 1970 and is the health arm of the National Academy of Sciences, which was chartered under President Abraham Lincoln in 1863. Nearly 150 years later, the National Academy of Sciences has expanded into what is collectively known as the National Academies. The National Academies includes the National Academies of Science Engineering, National Research Council and the IOM  (http://www.iom.edu/About-IOM.aspx).

The SSH/IOM Arcade and Showcase as modeled after the popular Serious Games and Virtual Environments Arcade and Showcases at IMSH that has taken place over the last five years. Twenty-six participants were on hand to demonstrate their games and virtual environments-based educational technology. A panel of SSH and IOM judges led by Dr. Jeff Taekman from Duke University Medical Center reviewed all of the participants work and awarded a top innovators award and runner’s up award.

Geoffrey Miller, MS, EMT-P; and Andrew Cross from Eastern Virginia Medical School received the top innovation award for their entry tilted: Automated Intelligent Mentoring System: Applying Game Technology to Advance Medical Education. The runner-up award was given to Joyce Flores representing Games that Work for  “Brush-Up “, a game to teach young children proper teeth brushing technique. Meetings Oversight Committee Update
Bob Armstrong & Wanda Goranson

The Meetings Oversight Commission has been focusing on 2016 IMSH.  Sabrina Koh, Jared Kutzin, and Christine Park, the 2016 IMSH Planning Committee, areMeeting Oversight still negotiating the selections, preliminary thought is that they have pulled together an exciting diverse set of speakers for January 2016. IMSH submission site was launched April 1.  The Meetings Oversight Commission has also been evaluating future sites for IMSH, specifically 2019 and 2020.  We are looking at a mix of new and previously visited locations and venues.  Expect that decision within the next couple of months as the final site assessments come in.

The Meetings Oversight Commission is also drafting planning and execution guidelines for IMSH, APMSH, and other SSH sponsored events.  The purpose of the guidelines is to create a flexible process to help Planning Committees to meet the time and budget demands of an SSH event.  Establishing guidelines keeps the planners from having to reinvent the wheel for every event, which is both inefficient and costly – as well as unnecessary!
