Strategize

We would like to transition to more interactive, hands-on sessions this year, designed to improve learning and retention. We want learners to leave the conference with solid, useful materials to takeaway and implement.

Standardize

We would like to work toward formalizing the Simulation Operations Specialist career role and responsibilities. We look to build on entry-level role definitions for a simulation operations specialist, and expand those definitions to enhance potential for growth and advancement in the field. Further, we are focused on defining our common challenges, tasks, and responsibilities, not the attributes that make us different.

Synergize

We would like to extend a special invitation to members of the SSH Simulation Operations and Technology Section to bring their knowledge and expertise to SimOps. We would like to use the SimOps conference to support the Section’s long-term goal of advocating for the educational and professional development needs of the Simulation Operations Specialist.

Opening Plenary

Philip Jennings

Philip Jennings is a licensed engineer leading a team that is transforming the way Newport News Shipbuilding (NNS) designs, plans, builds, and sustains the most technologically advanced ships in the world. In order to achieve this, NNS is pursuing a fully-integrated, virtual product model, a.k.a. “Digital Twin,” that impacts nearly every part of the shipbuilding enterprise.  

Jennings is responsible for a multi-million dollar research portfolio with projects including simulation, data architecture, model-to-machine integration, technology development, and process & tool implementation.  He is also a member of the ASME Model Based Enterprise (MBE) Standards Committee, the Department of Defense (DoD) Digital Engineering Working Group (DEWG), and the DoD Data and Modeling Working Group (DEDMWG).

Jennings grew up in Virginia Beach, earned a bachelor’s and master’s degree in civil engineering from Virginia Tech, and is enrolled in William & Mary’s Flex MBA program.  When not pursuing NNS’s digital transformation, Jennings enjoys leisure time with family and friends, serving on the leadership council at his local church, Virginia Tech sports, and spending time outdoors, especially playing tennis, snowboarding, or exploring with his boys.

Dawn draws upon her deep experience as a successful integrated career coach, and her perspective as a trilingual, interfaith minister, premarital counselor, and social entrepreneur to inform her talks. Dawn Camacho brings a rare combination of warmth, expertise, humor, and positive energy, making her an ideal speaker for professionals in high-stress arenas.

As the director of Whole Life Solutions. she works exclusively with overwhelmed professionals: privately and in small and large groups on topics such as mastering chaos, making major life change more simply for greater purpose and efficiency, effective decision-making, the astounding benefits of being second best, and how to live with radical work-life balance.

Diagnose and Repair Your Manikin: The Sim Show Must Go On!

This course addresses maintenance and repairs for adult, pediatric, and infant manikins through a hands-on immersive experience. Simulation centers can be negatively impacted when manikins fail to operate optimally. Users need the training to perform appropriate maintenance and repairs on their manikins. Maintaining sim operations requires becoming more knowledgeable and confident removing.

Simple Strategies to Standardize Moulage Creation

Moulage elevates a simulation experience, providing increased realism for learners. This course presents instruction on basic moulage supplies, concepts, and techniques for all budgets. Course participants will make their own wounds using an assortment of silicone, make-up, and tattoos in this interactive workshop. Moulage creations including burns, lacerations, rashes, and bruises will be demonstrated.

The EVMS AR/VR Case Study

Augmented and virtual reality technology and simulation in medical education and training has continuously evolved. While many have first-hand experience with various AR/VR technologies, few have the experience of implementing these technologies into their programs and curriculum. This course will serve as an experiential platform to bring information to attendees about optimal situations for leveraging AR/VR technologies and the implementation efforts and lessons learned at EVMS. Course faculty will provide insights into the various technologies developed and implemented at EVMS and the thoughtful approach to areas where the technologies can be applied.
