Update from Executive Director Jennifer Manos > The Society for Simulation in Healthcare
JOIN/RENEW SSH
09

In this month’s newsletter, I’d like to acknowledge the incredible successes that SSH is seeing and the people who are making them happen.

First is our membership. When I joined SSH in 2010, the Society had approximately 2,000 members. Today, I’m proud to share that we recently passed a significant milestone of over 4,000 members from 56 countries. This is an exciting achievement; it is a tangible sign of growth not only for SSH but for the field itself.

The second annual Healthcare Simulation Week, which took place in September, demonstrated the power of simulation on a global scale. Simulation centers from around the world actively participated in the week, which increased awareness about the global community of healthcare simulation practice, illustrated its unique utility to enhance the quality of healthcare, and created a focus for celebration among healthcare simulationists.

Healthcare Simulation Week generated more than 145,000 impressions on social media and more than 100 earned media impressions with an audience of 12 million. All these numbers represent increases from the debut year, and show how we, as a community, are increasing the understanding of what we do to people who may not understand it.

As we toast those numbers, we look ahead immediately to IMSH 2019, January 26-30, San Antonio, TX. IMSH provides you with the opportunity to strategize on emerging trends that impact healthcare simulation and patient safety. When you attend, you can learn from your peers about the successes achieved and challenges faced in the ever-changing dynamic of healthcare simulation. I encourage you to attend IMSH 2019 and join other healthcare simulation professionals in discovering solutions and strategies that will benefit your programs and organizations.

In San Antonio, TX this year, we will roll out several new features:

  • The Presidents Diamond Ball: We will honor 2019 Fellows, Centers that have been Accredited and that have renewed their Accreditations in 2018, and individuals who have earned or renewed their Certifications in 2018. The evening will include dinner, dancing and drinks. We hope to see you there for an amazing night and a great kick-off to IMSH 2019.
  • Bring your C-Suite professional: We are thrilled that our new program to demonstrate simulation to decision makers has already resulted in 20 registrations. This event will allow you and your C-Suite professional to focus on the key issues that matter most for your organization and learn from other professionals. In addition, it will help open communication regarding the potential impact and benefits healthcare simulation can have at your organization.
  • IMSH SimFit19 5K Run/Walk: Begin your #SimFit19 adventure by experiencing a spectacular San Antonio sunrise! The 5K will begin and end at Sunset Station in downtown San Antonio. Net proceeds benefit the Beverlee Anderson Scholarship Fund.

These successes happen with the passion and commitment of teams. A key strategic priority of the board is to strengthen the organizational infrastructure to achieve our strategic priorities. I’m proud of our SSH staff, all of whom have been productive at benchmarks far above the industry standards. I want to thank the SSH Board of Directors for their continued leadership and support and I’m glad to report that our team will be growing:

  • We now have seven fully realized departments: Education, Meetings and Events, Membership, Accreditation, Certification, Executive Office and Marketing.
  • We have recently filled four positions: IMSH Coordinator, Regional Events Coordinator, Online Education Coordinator, Meetings and Events Coordinator, Accreditation and Certification Coordinator (and promoted a new Director of Accreditation). We are seeking to hire a new Marketing Director.

As exciting as it has been to see all these developments reach fruition, I know that it is still just the beginning for SSH and for our field. Our team will grow, and our growth as a society will continue to advance this great cause for which we are all so passionate.

Sincerely,

Jennifer L. Manos, MBA, MSN, RN
