Hello, fellow Simulationists!

What strange times we are living in! For many parts of the world, restrictions are cautiously being lifted. Hopefully with social distancing, mask wearing, and other public health interventions, we are heading to a time where we can get back to work and our “new normal”.

And as we continue to move toward that goal, it’s my hope that you have been taking advantage of the amazing offerings through the Society. Due to the continued high demand for immediate online learning, SSH has expanded its online offerings through the SimSeries webinars and constant updates to the COVID-19 Resource page. There are now nearly 150 free links, recordings, and other useful tools that you can easily access.

Elsewhere, as many of you are aware, May is a time to celebrate nursing. This year is of particular note as it is the 200th birthday of Florence Nightingale. Additionally, the World Health Organization (WHO) has designated 2020 the International year of the Nurse and Midwife.

Subsequently, there are several major nursing initiatives that might be of interest (whether you are a nurse or have friends who are).

The WHO has released the first State of the Worlds Nursing Report.  In the report, Healthcare Simulation is highlighted as a policy lever to enable the nursing workforce. In particular, it mentions that simulation labs can provide “appropriate and complementary clinical experiences in primary care” (pg. 23).

“Nursing Now” is a collaboration between the WHO and the International Council of Nurses and is championed by Kate Middleton, Duchess of Cambridge. Nursing Now focuses on five core areas:

  • Ensuring that nurses and midwives have a more prominent voice in health policy-making;
  • Encouraging greater investment in the nursing workforce;
  • Recruiting more nurses into leadership positions;
  • Conducting research that helps determine where nurses can have the greatest impact;
  • Sharing of best nursing practices.

National Mental Health Month

May is also National Mental Health Month. During this challenging time, I know many of you who are working on the frontlines must be feeling incredibly overwhelmed. Hopefully you are, as much as possible, caring for yourselves.

In attending several webinars over the past weeks, I have been so impressed with the innovation that is occurring across the field. For many programs, it is a time to shine and be noticed for the incredible work that you provide healthcare.

We want those amazing accomplishments to continue, so please do remember to take time for yourselves and do what you can to keep yourself strong in all ways.

Be safe and stay healthy!

Sincerely,

Juli Maxworthy, DNP, MSN, MBA, RN, CNL, CPHQ, CPPS, CHSE, FSSH
