In this interactive session using videos and live streaming, participants will learn how the BRONCH Mentor High-Fidelity Bronchoscopy simulator is integrated into fellowship training programs and for proficiency assessment using validated checklists. We will review the evidence on the use of simulators for certification purposes. We will show videos to illustrate how the BRONCH Mentor is used for skills assessment on basic bronchoscopy and EBUS using validated assessment tools (BSTAT and EBUS-STAT) - implemented at international courses and, in the evaluation of Interventional Pulmonology fellowship candidates at the University of Chicago.

Digital Virtual Training: Steps to take trainees away from the classrooms

Prehospital to the Emergency Room: Simulating the Continuum of Care

Many simulation centers bear the important responsibility of training both prehospital and emergency room personnel.  The curriculums and training objectives for each environment can be significantly different, yet frequently overlap. Setting the conditions to support continuum of care training from point of injury to the emergency room is a valuable skill for simulation centers supporting an integrated emergency response system. The presenter will lead participants through a needs analysis designed to enhance a simulation centers ability to support blended prehospital and emergency room simulation response based on lessons learned developing simulation training for the United States Army and NATO Special Forces.

1. Identify unique learning objectives for prehospital medical professionals in the setting of trauma response.

2. Identify unique learning objectives for emergency room personnel in the setting of trauma response.

Speaker: Dr. Dan Irizarry, COL(R), MC, is a board certified family physician and Associate Professor of Family Medicine at the University of Central Florida Medical School.  Dr. Irizarry served 26 year in the United States Army primarily in the special operations and prehospital care arena.  He is credited with establishing the NATO Special Operations Headquarters Allied Center for Medical Education, a fully immersive simulation center that continues to support training in the point of injury, en route evacuation, and surgical environments for NATO and US Forces.  Today, Dr. Irizarry is the medical director at an Orlando, Florida, family medicine clinic and the clinical advisor to Tactical Medical Solutions, Inc.

Explore, Expose, and Promote Equitable Care Through Patient Simulation

In this one-hour session which will include live Q&A with the speaker, you will have a chance to explore the topic of implicit bias and its antidote, cultural humility. Implicit bias has a negative influence on diagnosis, medication management, and even the wholistic care of a patient. Cultural humility is a key to addressing implicit bias. But developing the skialls necessary to practice cultural humility are not easy. Policies and procedure and classroom lectures have done little to prepare practitioners to address what has become a major problem in America—inequitable care to black, ethnic, and other underserved populations. Simulation solves the problem by giving students and learners context, context that will enable them to perform better critical thinking and maintain better situational awareness in the future to provide equitable care.  

Objectives: 

The intent of this session is to give you enough knowledge about implicit bias to create simulations that will allow your students or learners to uncover implicit bias. You will see how simulation can show students and learners the effects that implicit bias can have on patient care. And, you will see how you can use simulation to help students and learners incorporate cultural humility in their actions to provide better patient care in the future.
