How to Run an Effective Respiratory Simulation with a Remote Audience

Restrictions around social distancing have forced institutions to become inventive when looking for ways to teach. So, how can educators provide effective simulation training in a remote environment? In this session, you will learn the tools and equipment we suggest as well as tips to provide the most realistic and engaging remote simulation. But, don’t take our word for it! We will run our brand new COVID-19 virtual simulation, and you can sit back and experience what your learners will experience. Gather information and make treatment decisions while we run a simulation in our very own remote simulation environment.

Objectives:
§ Learn tips and tools to run an effective, realistic virtual simulation
§ Learn how to get your remote learners engaged in an interactive simulation
§ Experience the virtual simulation from the learner’s perspective

Why well-trained instructors are the most important aspect of simulations and how online instructor courses can help

After over 20 years of medical simulation we know that the skilled instructor is the most important aspect of successful medical simulation. Nevertheless, a lot of money and effort is often invested in hardware, instead of the education and training of instructors. We point out why formal instructor training is so important for the success of your simulation courses, what happens if the instructors are not well trained and what the most important aspects for instructor training are, including human factors and Crew Resource Management (CRM). We also show the great new opportunities that have arisen in online instructor training and share the experiences we have made with hundreds of course participants in our online courses. There will be plenty of time to answer your questions and discuss your topics of interest.

Objectives:
- Importance of instructor training
- Advantages of skilled instructors and problems with uneducated instructors
- Role of human factors & CRM
- Experience with formal online instructor training courses
- Your questions answered & discussed with faculty

Designing VR Learning Experiences

VR is emerging as one of the more important advancements in medical simulation in recent history. The technology is moving quickly and is different in important ways from anything that has come before it. It’s critical for simulation educators to understand the state of the evidence on the technology, the capabilities of current VR simulation systems, and where the technology is going. While the science of educating learners in VR is still young, pioneers in the field are already identifying strategies for making use of the technology’s unique strengths and methods for avoiding some of the pitfalls associated with it’s weaknesses. This workshop will help a sim educator get completely up to speed on VR sim, get hands on experience with the latest in VR simulation technology, and gain an understanding for how to design learning experiences for virtual reality.

Two Brand New Ultrasound Training Simulators: BlockSim™ and VausSim™ 3D

A new generation of ultrasound training simulators, designed to meet the Simulation Centers ultrasound training needs and to acquire and practice technical skills in a safe, controlled, and reproducible environment, will be presented by the Accurate team. The virtual learning lab will be split into two parts: we will first introduce the BlockSim™ simulator, an innovative and patented high fidelity system for the simulation of ultrasound-guided interfascial plane blocks. BlockSim™ represents a new generation of regional anaesthesia simulators: this simulator allows the use of real needles, the puncture of extremely realistic tissue inserts and the inflation of the anaesthetic fluid without generating needle tracks or damages. The visualization of the needle tip as it is passing through the tissues, the confirmation of the alignment with the desired path and a continual visualization of local anaesthetic solution delivery to optimize local anaesthetic distribution are some of the features that make this simulator unique on the market. We will then introduce the VausSim™, a Versatile Advanced Ultrasound Simulator that offers the possibility to make the skin of any simulator or manikin or standardized patient usable for real-life ultrasound training on medical simulation scenarios. This simulator allows the instructor to independently create, through the use of a powerful editor, a customized and exclusive casebook of real ultrasound images/videos/volumes without any additional cost. VausSim™ is equipped with 3 ultrasound probes (linear, convex and phased array) and a full library of clinical modules including a COVID19 scenario.

Prehospital to the Emergency Room: Simulating the Continuum of Care

Many simulation centers bear the important responsibility of training both prehospital and emergency room personnel.  The curriculums and training objectives for each environment can be significantly different, yet frequently overlap. Setting the conditions to support continuum of care training from point of injury to the emergency room is a valuable skill for simulation centers supporting an integrated emergency response system. The presenter will lead participants through a needs analysis designed to enhance a simulation centers ability to support blended prehospital and emergency room simulation response based on lessons learned developing simulation training for the United States Army and NATO Special Forces.

1. Identify unique learning objectives for prehospital medical professionals in the setting of trauma response.

2. Identify unique learning objectives for emergency room personnel in the setting of trauma response.

3. Identify shared learning objectives across the continuum of care.

4. Evaluate barriers to conducting continuity of care simulation.

5. Evaluate opportunities and benefits for continuum of care simulation.

6. Consider ways to objectively measure training outcomes.

7. Consider potential return on investments.

Speaker: Dr. Dan Irizarry, COL(R), MC, is a board certified family physician and Associate Professor of Family Medicine at the University of Central Florida Medical School.  Dr. Irizarry served 26 year in the United States Army primarily in the special operations and prehospital care arena.  He is credited with establishing the NATO Special Operations Headquarters Allied Center for Medical Education, a fully immersive simulation center that continues to support training in the point of injury, en route evacuation, and surgical environments for NATO and US Forces.  Today, Dr. Irizarry is the medical director at an Orlando, Florida, family medicine clinic and the clinical advisor to Tactical Medical Solutions, Inc.

Explore, Expose, and Promote Equitable Care Through Patient Simulation

In this one-hour session which will include live Q&A with the speaker, you will have a chance to explore the topic of implicit bias and its antidote, cultural humility. Implicit bias has a negative influence on diagnosis, medication management, and even the wholistic care of a patient. Cultural humility is a key to addressing implicit bias. But developing the skialls necessary to practice cultural humility are not easy. Policies and procedure and classroom lectures have done little to prepare practitioners to address what has become a major problem in America—inequitable care to black, ethnic, and other underserved populations. Simulation solves the problem by giving students and learners context, context that will enable them to perform better critical thinking and maintain better situational awareness in the future to provide equitable care.

Objectives:

The intent of this session is to give you enough knowledge about implicit bias to create simulations that will allow your students or learners to uncover implicit bias. You will see how simulation can show students and learners the effects that implicit bias can have on patient care. And, you will see how you can use simulation to help students and learners incorporate cultural humility in their actions to provide better patient care in the future.

How to Successfully Deliver Ultrasound Simulations & Their Benefits During COVID-19 and Beyond - Part I

Learn how to flexibly integrate ultrasound training and simulation into your Simulation Center. Along with a case study, examine the benefits of ultrasound, training challenges, and how simulation can incorporate ultrasound to assist with applying medical decision-making. After the training, attendees will be able to access complimentary ultrasound training tools.

Point-of-care ultrasound is proven-effective to provide better patient outcomes in a cost-effective manner. In this two-part series, get insights into why ultrasound and ultrasound simulation is becoming so imperative during COVID-19 and beyond. Additionally, attendees will examine how ultrasound simulation can be run with real-patient cases whether in-person or remote.
