Preparing Successful Presentations: A Guide for Operations Specialists - Presented by the SOTS Section
Overview:
Do you have an idea for a presentation, but feel intimidated by the submission process? Designing and submitting a course for SimOps (or any SSH sponsored conference) can be a daunting task. This course will focus on streamlining and de-mystifying the course proposal submission process for SSH conferences. Faculty will discuss how to construct meaningful learning objectives, as well as identify important, high-yield topics for presentations. Faculty will also provide a “behind the scenes look” at the review process and discuss your ideas for proposal topics.
Objectives:
- Describe the best practices used to create learning objectives to form the foundation of a course proposal.
- Identify course topics to meet the Simulation Operations community’s needs for education and training.
- Discuss the review process used to assess and score course proposal submissions.

Rewiring Your Control: A Technical Look at Control Rooms – Presented by SOTS Section
Overview
Control Centers are the heart of a simulation center and come in different designs and sizes. Though they play a vital role, the scholarly literature on centralized control rooms specifically is very scarce. The ASTEC lab decided to utilize a centralized control room when renovating, switching over from a bedside setup. This course will be an overview of our data and case studies of a centralized control room vs noncentralized.
Objectives:
- Attendees will understand the decision making process behind ASTEC implementing a centralized control room
- Attendees will engage in weighing the benefits and limitations of centralized vs decentralized controls for Simulation
- Attendees will hear an analysis based on information gathered from ASTEC using a centralized control room

Centered Simulations: Finding the balance between dazzling technology, fidelity, cost and practicality.
Overview:
Often purchasing decisions for simulations are made prior to considering learning objectives and audience needs. Likewise, deployment and support considerations can also determine if success is even possible. This discussion will detail and approach to evaluating simulation technology in three common use scenarios.

- List several practical examples where low cost and low fidelity approaches may be superior

Setup 101: Creating Visual ‘Quick Start Guides’ - Presented by the SOTS Section
Overview:
Setting up a simulation can be a chaotic and stressful experience for Simulation Operation Specialists (SOS). It takes time to read the template, tease out the relevant bits of information, create a list of equipment, supplies, & moulage needed, and then start the actual work of setup. At a high-volume center, this might be time the SOS does not have. At institutions where cases are repeated on a regular basis, time can be saved by applying the theory of standard work and implementing a practice of utilizing standardized setup guides. This not only helps to improve the repeatability of a case but helps to ensure reliability in the setup. This 50-minute presentation will introduce the ‘Quick Start Guide’ format of setup guides. The presenter will introduce an example simulation case, identify elements important for setup, and construct those elements into a visual setup guide. Each learner will leave with a solid understanding of the process of creating an effective visual setup guide.
Objectives:
- Outline the core components and benefits of creating standardized visual setup guides for simulation scenarios.
- Experiment with the functionality of example setup guides.
- Create a draft needs assessment for setup guides at Simulation Operation Specialist's own institution.

Planning Ahead for IMSH 2024: Submission Form Tips from the Planning Team
Overview:
Are you interested in presenting at IMSH 2024 but feel intimidated by the submission process? Submitting to present at the International Meeting for Simulation in Healthcare can be stressful but SSH is here to help. This course will focus on de- mystifying the submission process for IMSH 2024 scheduled for January 20 – 24, 2024 in San Diego, California. Faculty will discuss how to construct measurable learning objectives and identify important topics for presentations. Faculty will also provide a look at the review process and allow time to discuss your ideas for proposal topics.

Time Well Spent: Employing Data on How SOS Spend Work Time

Overview
Data tells your simulation center’s story. Panelists will focus on documenting simulation operation specialist (SOS) production versus administrative time. This panel will share their collective knowledge and ideas to employ time tracking data to your benefit and inspire action from stakeholders. The bigger picture is not to become more efficient to accommodate more tasks and meetings, but to understand the impetus and importance of sharing data to drive future center plans – resource allocation, strategic planning, annual reporting, etc.

Effectiveness of Simulation Versus Didactic Video-Based Learning to Teach Advanced Lung Isolation Techniques
Overview
We conducted a prospective randomized study at a single academic heart center. We randomized anesthesiology fellows to receive one of two structured educational interventions designed to teach advanced lung isolation skills, a simulation workshop, or a video-based didactic session. To assess all three Bloom's taxonomy domains, performance measurements included pre- and post-intervention cognitive tests and affective surveys and a post-intervention psychomotor task (time to complete lung isolation). Although greater affective learning of advanced lung isolation skills occurred with simulation-based compared to didactic video-based education, the authors found no differences between the teaching approaches in cognitive and psychomotor learning among advanced anesthesiology trainees.

- Evaluate effectiveness of simulation when compared to didactic video-based education in teaching advanced lung isolation techniques to anesthesiology fellows.
- Understand design for simulation-based learning and teaching of one lung ventilation techniques for anesthesiology fellows.
- Use the findings from this study as a basis, the audience will be able to design a simulation-based educational intervention for teaching advanced skills that incorporates effective strategies for cognitive, affective, and psychomotor learning.

OSCEs in APP Education: The Good, the Bad and the Ugly
Overview:
This presentation will explore the use of the objective structured clinical examination (OSCE) in advanced practice provider (APP) education. APPs include physician assistants/associates (PAs) and advanced practice registered nurses (APRNs) which encompass certified nurse practitioners, nurse midwives, nurse anesthetists and clinical nurse specialists. The OSCE is used for formative and summative assessment in APP education. Some of the initiatives that are included in current APP OSCEs include: 1) critical diagnoses, 2) management of diverse patient populations, 3) challenging communication situations, 4) competence assessment for focused history taking, and 5) validation of completion of program of study. OCSE assessment tools will be discussed in this presentation.

- Discuss best practices and tips/tricks for OSCE implementation

How to Successfully Submit your Next Big Idea, Completed Research Study, or FIRES Manuscript
Overview
This presentation will provide an overview and cover the requirements for submission of scientific content including 1) completed research studies, 2) research study development and presentation program (DPP), and 3) Future Innovators in Research, Education and Simulation (FIRES) manuscripts. These three separate submission tracks aim to capture innovative research studies that have results ready for dissemination or to help investigators better design, develop, implement, and prepare simulation based research projects. An overview of what to expect in the submission portal will also be provided as well as tips for success!

- Describe differences in three scientific content submission tracks including: completed research abstracts, research study development and presentation programs (DPPs), and FIRES manuscripts.
- Submit abstracts and DPPs that meet the standards for IMSH Scientific Content.
- Submit a FIRES submission that meets standards for both IMSH and Simulation in Healthcare.
