In a recent Becker’s Hospital Review list, “34 hospitals and health systems with great simulation and education programs," 21 SSH Accredited programs were included. That’s more than 61 percent!

If you aren’t familiar with Becker’s Hospital Review, it is, according to beckershospitalreview.com, the leading source of cutting-edge business and legal information for healthcare industry leaders and part of a trade publication portfolio that includes: Becker's Hospital Review, Becker's ASC Review, Becker's Clinical Leadership + Infection Control, Becker's Spine Review, and Becker's Dental Review.

And now, obviously, they’re noticing – and including – Healthcare Simulation programs. How amazing it was to see that healthcare simulation is at a place overall where a list like this now exists!

The article, published in early November, acknowledged what many of you know to be true within your own institutions: that “hospitals and health systems with simulation and education programs see improved patient outcomes, reduced healthcare costs and enhanced patient safety.” We’re extremely proud that 21 of the outstanding Healthcare Simulation programs recognized in the article are SSH Accredited. Those 21 programs have been through a rigorous review of their processes and outcomes, and in meeting the SSH Accreditation Standards, exemplify the hallmarks of high-quality simulation.

But, while we were excited for those programs to receive the recognition they deserve, it points out how our work is just beginning.

Our goal is for ALL programs on a list like Becker’s to be under the SSH Accreditation umbrella. We love the growth we’re seeing in healthcare simulation, watching even our own number of Accredited Programs grow from our original five in 2010 to now 245 and counting!

If you’d like to learn more about becoming SSH Accredited, we’d love to see and talk with you in person in San Diego this coming January at IMSH 2024. We’ll be holding courses that share more information about each of the five areas of SSH Accreditation and showcasing some of the exemplary practices of our currently Accredited Programs that you may be able to adopt within your institution.

We know there are many more programs beyond the Becker’s list, both SSH Accredited and not, that are doing outstanding work and making healthcare settings safer for patients. That said, we would love the opportunity to learn more about your program. So, why wait to achieve recognition for being among the best in healthcare simulation? The next SSH Accreditation application deadline is Feb. 15, 2024.

To start: the SSH Accreditation Standards and corresponding Companion Documents — for both Full SSH Accreditation and Provisional SSH Accreditation — are publicly posted on our website.

We’re thankful for all who have helped our program achieve the status it enjoys today, and we’re thankful for those who soon will join.

Let’s talk!

SSH Director of Accreditation
